Qom, country’s only standard metropolis in terms of fire stations, official says

The director general of the Qom Municipality Fire and Safety Services Organization says Qom is the only standard metropolis of the country in terms of the number of fire stations.

Abbas Jafari made the remarks in a ceremony commemorating the National Day of Fire Fighting and Safety Services on Wednesday.

Referring to the construction of the main fire station on the Great Prophet (PBUH) Boulevard, Jafari stated that this station is the only main fire station in the country with modern equipment.

Over the last 10 years, many changes have been made in the Qom Fire Department, but this organization needs more support from the municipality and other provincial officials to better serve the people, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the municipal official noted that although the fire department is a service organization, but with measures taken during the past few years, it annually earns a net income of 50 billion rials.

September 29 was first observed as the National Firefighters’ Day in the Iranian calendar year 1379 (March 2000-March 2001), 20 years after a tragic incident during the Iran-Iraq war.

In the Iranian calendar year 1359 (March 1980-March 1990), on the same day, Iraqi warplanes attacked the Abadan oil refinery and set it ablaze. Firefighters went on to extinguish the fire, but this time fire was not their only enemy; the refinery was extensively shelled again and many firefighters were martyred in the incident.
