Qom mayor offers condolence on Imam Khomeini’s demise anniversary

The mayor of Qom Dr. Seyed Morteza Saghaiannejad has expressed condolences over the 32nd demise anniversary of Imam Khomeini, the revered founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the anniversary of June 5, 1963 protests.

In his condolence message, Dr. Seyed Morteza Saghaiannejad said the anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s departure is a great opportunity to recognize the ideals, thoughts and ideas of the late Imam, explain dimensions of his personality, and renew the covenant with her goals.

Saghaiannejad also referred to the anniversary of June 5, 1963 uprising as a prelude to the revolution’s victory, saying that this tragic event can be considered as an effective source for the history of developments in Islamic Republic of Iran.

The mourning ceremonies for Imam Khomeini coincide with the anniversary of June 5, 1963 protests. The protests broke out after Imam Khomeini was arrested for delivering a historic speech in the holy city of Qom, where he lambasted the “capitulation law” granting immunity to Americans on Iranian soil.

Every year on the anniversary of the passing away, a commemoration ceremony is held at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum in southern Tehran, with large crowds of mourners attending, but this is the second year that the annual event is scrapped due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Imam Khomeini passed away in 1989 at the age of 86, almost a decade after the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which saw the overthrow of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in Iran.
