Qom leading in decontaminating medical waste: Official

The caretaker of the Waste Management Organization of Qom Municipality has announced that Qom is the only city in the country where all medical waste is decontaminated and then buried.

Referring to the outbreak of Coronavirus and an increase in infectious wastes, Seyyed Abdullah Mirebrahimi said that the wastes have been collected by a separate fleet, decontaminated and then disposed.

Mirebrahimi stated that some of this waste is disinfected inside hospitals, adding currently, 9 hospitals out of 10 healthcare centers in Qom have sanitization equipment.

Some clinics do not have sanitization equipment, so their waste is decontaminated after collection, the caretaker of the Waste Management Organization of Qom Municipality said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the municipal official stressed that more than 6 tons of medical waste is collected daily, reiterating since the outbreak of the COVID-19, this amount has sometimes reached 11 tons.

He further noted that in order to have better waste management, we are now planning to bury the safe waste of hospitals, such as kitchen waste, separately, and segregate the laboratory and medical waste.

The mayor of Qom Dr. Seyyed Morteza Saghaiannejad has earlier announced that Qom is the only city in the country that is equipped with the infectious waste disposal device.
