Qom blanketed in black on passing of Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani

The Director General of Communications and International Affairs of Qom Municipality announced that the streets of  Qom were blanketed in black, especially in the central part of the city and the funeral route of Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani, a former secretary of the Constitutional Council.

Mehdi Kalantarzadeh stated that covering the city of Qom city with mourning flags, black threads, and condolence banners were among measures taken yesterday.

He made the remarks referring to the measures and programs of Qom Municipality to hold a glorious funeral and memorial rituals of the top cleric.

He also touched upon the announcement of public mourning by the government on the occasion of this devastating loss.

He went on to add that  Qom Municipality will have special cooperation and participation in the funeral of this great Shiite world Ulema and the necessary planning has been done to provide extensive services to the attendees.

Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani passed away at age 103 on Tuesday after cardiac arrest.

Born in February 1919 in Iran’s central city of Golpaygan, Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani became a Grand Ayatollah and a Marji’ (source to follow or religious reference), a title given to the highest level of Shiite authorities.

After the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, he was elected to the Assembly of Experts and was a member of the Constitutional Council.

The late cleric has written scores of religious books in Persian and Arabic, some of which have won annual national book awards.
