The mayor of Qom, emphasizing that the capacity and capability of municipalities are important in integrated urban management, says currently, there is no proper structure in the field of interaction between the government and municipalities.
Dr. Seyyed Morteza Saghaiannejad made the comments n a Thursday meeting with the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Provinces, referring to the importance of achieving integrated urban management.
There are more than 1300 municipalities in the country, but they rarely have the capacity to implement integrated urban management for various reasons, he stated.
Stressing that the capacity and capability of municipalities are important in integrated urban management, he continued, “Currently, there is no proper structure in the field of government-municipality interaction.”
Criticizing some selective decisions in the system of urban management in the country, the mayor of Qom noted, “More than 70% of the country’s population lives in cities and 94% of the province’s population lives in Qom, which increases the importance of municipalities due to urban complexities.”
He went on to say that there are capable expert teams in important areas of decision-making in municipalities.
The capacity of about half of the members of the parliament who have a record in urban management is an opportunity for fundamental decision-making in the field of integrated urban management, he added.
Dr. Saghaiannejad pointed out that the capacity for cooperation between the government and the parliament should be used to formulate and approve a comprehensive plan for integrated urban management.
