The Deputy of Transportation and Traffic of Qom Municipality stresses the need to persuade citizens to use bicycles instead of cars.
Abbas Zakerian said one of the challenges of the country’s metropolises is using automobiles widely, we have prioritized the movement and storage of cars on our streets.
Referring to the providing of the comprehensive transportation plan for Qom, Zakerian stated that more than 15 years have passed since the last transportation plan for Qom, and in this regard, a comprehensive document for transportation and traffic in Qom has been prepared.
The deputy mayor outlined that another measure taken in the field of urban transportation in Qom is developing a comprehensive bicycle plan for the city.
After the approval by the provincial traffic council, this project has started in the first phase at Shahid Sadoughi Street, in which more than 180 km of special bicycle route has been foreseen, he added.
He reiterated that ‘Unfortunately, during the past years, not much attention has been paid to human-centered policies in urban design in the country, and most roads and streets have been built for cars, and these decisions have come with serious consequences in metropolises today.
Emphasizing that one of the ways to reduce these problems is to encourage citizens to use bicycles, he reminded that in addition to making it a culture, special attention should be paid to bicycle paths in urban planning so that people can ride bicycles in a safe way.
